Most people have a basic understanding of lead poisoning. They know that it is caused by ingesting lead. They know enough not to let their children chew on paint chips, just in case. Individuals suffering from lead poisoning usually have no idea that anything is wrong until very serious symptoms arise. Once these intense symptoms arise, often times irreversible damage has already happened.

Lead gives a smooth, glass like finish to clay dish-wares making them very beautiful and attractive but the problem is that lead can easily leach out from a dishware that is heated or exposed to some type of fruits and vegetables. Another source of this poisoning is gasoline, a lot countries around the world still use leaded gas for their automobile and engines.

Early diagnosis is essential with lead poisoning. Abdominal pain, irritability, and headaches are all symptoms to watch out for. Since these symptoms are indicative of other medical problems as well, make sure to have blood tests done on children who may have been exposed to lead. Although a single high, toxic dose of lead can cause severe emergency symptoms, it is more common for lead poisoning to build up slowly over time. Repeated exposure to lead can cause serious health problems, such as difficulty sleeping or lowered IQ in children. Health problems that are associated with lead poisoning:

o nervous system and kidney damage

o poor muscle coordination

o speech, language and behavior problems

o learning disabilities

o decreased muscle and bone growth

o hearing damage

Protecting your new baby from lead poisoning is very important. It seems like there is an unsafe product recalled every month due to lead paint or other such component, so this task can be daunting. However, it is worth making sure that your home is safe from lead-tainted items because lead poisoning can lead to lifelong disabilities in your child. Lead poisoning in children results in serious health problems such as learning disabilities, mental retardation, behavioral problems, lower IQ, stunted growth, hearing impairment and juvenile delinquency.

Lead poisoning in children is usually from exposure to homes with lead based paint. Deteriorating lead paint can cause toxic levels of lead to build up in the form of household dust. It can also be detected in solid around the home. Children playing in the front or back yard of homes containing lead based paint are usually exposed through the soil. Lead can build up and harm pretty much any part of the body. It hinders calcium absorption in bones, which leads to problems with growth and muscle coordination. Also, as blood carries the toxin throughout the body, it has a decreased ability to carry around oxygen.

It is understandable that parents would want to immediately rid their home of lead based paint. But if your home does have led based paint, great precaution should be taken while removing it as paint removal can cause much more damage than leaving it be. The most important treatment method for lead poisoning is to use special type of drugs called as chelators. The medicines bind with lead and remove it through urine.
