Tumescent liposuction is one of the various methods of fat removal currently being practiced by plastic surgeons. It can be done using a few different methods and can be done as an inpatient or outpatient procedure. Depending on the area of the body you want to perform fat tissue removal on, this might be the best way to go.

History And How It Works

This surgery was developed in the 1980s by surgeons specializing in dermatology. Since its inception, this has become one of the most popular of the various methods to perform fat removal. This type of fat removal is thought of by many to be an important advancement in the field and it has completely changed the way in which surgeons remove fat from the body. Some surgeons even go so far as to say it is the best method of fat removal currently available.

Here is how this method works: surgeons use a local anesthetic. A large liquid mixture in injected directly into the areas in which fat removal is going to occur. This liquid mixture contains saline, anesthetic and epinephrine. The epinephrine is important because it shrinks the capillaries in the area and this makes the amount of blood loss minimal. Some patients still require slight sedation, but it is usually only used on patients who might feel overly nervous about their surgery. Usually the patient is conscious for their surgery. The surgeon makes a small incision in the patient's skin and inserts a tube that is connected to a suction machine. The surgery uses a smaller cannulae than other types of fat removal and this means that there is less bleeding and bruising.

Benefits

As previously mentioned, this kind of fat removal results in less bleeding and bruising because a smaller tube is used. It also causes a lot fewer irregularities in the patient's skin and the patient usually has a faster recovery than they do with other types of fat removal. Also, because the anesthesia is a local that is injected, the patients do not usually experience the grogginess or nausea that usually comes with being exposed to general anesthesia.

Risks Involved

No surgery is without risks. In the case of this surgery, some patients experience scar softening and can take up to a full year to completely heal from the surgery. Some patients feel numbness in the area of their surgery because it can take twenty four hours for the local anesthetic to work through the tissue and out of the body. After the anesthetic wears off, some patients experience discomfort.

Choosing to have fat removal done is a big decision to make, but the more important decision is choosing the kind of surgery to have done. You want to make sure that your surgery goes smoothly and that there is as little risk to your body as possible. Talk with your surgeon about the different methods that are available to you. Many surgeons prefer the tumescent liposuction method, but together you and your surgeon will decide the best course of action to take.
