The reverse osmosis process of purifying the water, like all the other processes available on the market today has advantages and disadvantages. The main disadvantages of reverse osmosis are the high amount of water consumed in the process of purifying water and the fact that filter need to be disinfected on a regular basis. Even with all the known disadvantages the filters that purify the water through the reverse osmosis process are very well rated by customers.

One of the questions usually asked about the filters that use reverse osmosis is How does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink?--well first of all the process of reverse osmosis eliminates any smell the water might have, any color the water might have and any bad taste the water might have. It also removes some of the salts and minerals and chemicals like lead and/or mercury if this is present.

The most common complain people have about the reverse osmosis process is that it consumes too much water to purify a relatively small amount of water. The systems that use this method of purifying water usually recuperate only about 5% of the water they use and their water bill is higher than before filtering it. Thus many people complain that these are the principal disadvantages of reverse osmosis.

A lot of people know or heard that if the storage unit for the purified water that the system has is not sanitized on a regular basis, it will support growth of other types of bacteria. As a consequence the water will not be filtered or purified enough and thus the question of how does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink arises again. The reality is that there is no available method on the market that can purify and keep the water pure at all times. Reverse osmosis achieves this in a percentage of 99.9% is combined with other types of filters.

The answer to the question how does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink is that the process is running in such a way that is allows a very high elimination rate for a wide range of contaminants. Also most of the reverse osmosis systems have extra filters that help keeping the membrane cleaner for a longer period of time. The filters are usually removing sediments filters and carbon filters. The water related issues are considered disadvantages of reverse osmosis because a gallon of purified water is obtained from 3 or more gallons of pipe water. However studies show that the reverse osmosis system is very cost effective on long term and it can bring the cost of pure water at 5 cents per gallon. Of course the more advanced the system and the better the quality of the filters and other parts, the better the quality of the water and thus the safer to drink.

The problem for a lot of people is not the cost but the fact that through reverse osmosis almost all the minerals and salts are eliminated, even the good ones that our body needs. However a lot of nutritionists consider that we should be getting our minerals from food and not from water, so having water without any nutrimental value is not a problem.

No matter how many advantages or disadvantages one can find for any water filtration system, there will always be people for and against it. It is in the end of matter of preference and of how much one is willing to invest in having pure water. But no matter what water filtration system is used, the need of having filtered water is bigger and bigger.
